IEP: From Rights to Reality

What the law requires, what happens in practice, and what parents can do next.

I’m looking for 15 to 40 parents to join the founding cohort of a new eight-week live IEP course.

Parents are expected to make important decisions about evaluations, goals, services, supports, and placement, often without anyone fully explaining how the IEP process works.

This will not just be a generic overview of IEPs.

There are a million of those. I'm building this to provide something different.

It's the course that only I can teach. 

That means you will learn everything you need to understand the process and your rights. But you will also learn what I know from having trained IEP teams, led special education systems, reviewed complex cases, and participated in district-level decisions.

I have worked as a school psychologist, dispute resolution coordinator, and a special education director. I have advised districts about whether to file for due process. 

(I'm also the parent of an autistic child currently navigating the IEP system.)

 I'm using all of my experience to help parents understand:

  • What the IEP process requires
  • How districts often approach decisions in practice
  • What to look for in documents and meetings
  • What questions to ask
  • What to do when if feels like there's more to the story

You will learn not only how to understand the IEP document, but also how decisions are made, what may be influencing them, and what you can do next.

Each session will address 4 questions:

How is this supposed to work?

What the law requires and what an individualized, educationally meaningful process should look like.

What often happens in practice?

How schools and districts commonly approach it, including the realities that can influence decisions.

What should parents watch for?

Vague language, missing information, common pitfalls, and explanations that do not tell the whole story.

What can parents do next?

Specific questions to ask, requests to make, information to document, and options to consider.

What makes this course different

A district’s stated reason is not always the only factor driving a decision.

That does not mean assuming bad intent. It means learning to distinguish among:

  • Your child’s individualized needs
  • Legal or procedural requirements
  • Disagreements about the data
  • Staffing or scheduling limitations
  • Budget or program constraints
  • Local practices being presented as requirements
